Where to Go on a Game Drive in Uganda

Queen Elizabeth National Park

Queen Elizabeth is one of Uganda’s most versatile safari destinations, with broad savannah plains, crater lakes, woodland and the Kazinga Channel. Game drives around the Kasenyi Plains are particularly rewarding for lions, Uganda kobs, buffaloes, elephants and other plains wildlife, while the Ishasha sector in the south is known for its tree-climbing lions.

A game drive here can be combined with a Kazinga Channel boat cruise, giving you the opportunity to experience the park from both land and water.

Murchison Falls National Park

Murchison Falls is Uganda’s largest national park and offers extensive areas for wildlife viewing. The northern sector, including the Buligi area, is known for elephants, giraffes, lions, buffaloes, hartebeests and other savannah species.

Kidepo Valley National Park

Game drives can be combined with walking safaris and, where available, night drives that provide a chance to look for nocturnal species such as bushbabies, genets, civets, porcupines and leopards.

Big Cats

Types of Game Drives

Morning Game Drives

Early morning is often one of the most productive periods for wildlife viewing. Temperatures are cooler and many animals are still active after the night, while the softer morning light also provides good conditions for photography.

Afternoon and Evening Game Drives

As temperatures begin to fall later in the day, wildlife becomes more active again. Afternoon drives can continue into the evening, providing opportunities to observe animals feeding, moving between habitats or settling down as daylight fades.

Night Game Drives

Night drives provide a completely different perspective on Uganda’s wildlife. In destinations where they are permitted, guides and rangers use spotlights to search for nocturnal species including bushbabies, genets, civets, porcupines, hyenas and, with luck, leopards.

Lake Mburo is particularly well known for this experience.

Full-Day Game Drives

A full-day drive allows more time to explore different parts of a park without being restricted to a short morning or afternoon session. Depending on the itinerary, guests may carry a picnic or bush lunch and continue exploring through the middle of the day.

Safari Vehicles and What to Expect

Game drives with Wild Compass Africa are conducted in 4×4 safari vehicles suited to Uganda’s varied terrain. Our private safaris generally use Land Cruisers with elevated seating and pop-up roof hatches, giving guests good visibility while allowing space for photography equipment.

Best Time of Day for Game Drives

The best time for a game drive depends on the species you hope to see, the park you are visiting and the season.

Morning drives generally offer cooler conditions and active wildlife, while afternoon and evening drives can provide opportunities to watch animals becoming active as temperatures drop.

Night drives are reserved for destinations and areas where they are permitted and offer the opportunity to observe species that are rarely active during daylight hours.
