Gorilla Trekking
Scroll for more Info
Gorilla trekking involves venturing into Uganda’s mountainous forests to encounter wild mountain gorillas. The adventure starts with a briefing from the park staff before you embark on your journey with guides and trackers familiar with the forest and the movements of the gorilla groups.
The hike can last several hours, depending on the location of the gorillas that particular day. The paths wind through dense vegetation, uneven terrain, and occasionally steep, muddy hills. The forest may be silent in certain areas while vibrant with bird songs and the sounds of rustling leaves in others. Throughout the trek, your guides assist you in following the trail until you finally find the gorilla family.
Once the gorillas are located, visitors typically receive one hour with the family. You might observe a silverback resting in the vicinity while younger gorillas engage in play, mothers tending to their infants, or other group members foraging on leaves and stems. Their behavior can vary, and they may navigate through the foliage while you observe from the distance established by your guides.
The interaction occurs within the gorillas’ natural environment, so there is no predetermined scene or assured photograph. You should adhere to the guides’ directions, maintain the required distance, and remain quiet and respectful around the animals.
Mountain gorilla trekking is managed under rules designed to protect the animals and their habitat. Permit fees contribute to conservation and park management, while tourism also supports employment and businesses in surrounding communities.
Visitors must follow the park team’s instructions, maintain the required distance from gorillas and avoid trekking when unwell, as human illnesses can spread to them. These precautions help protect the gorillas and the people who work to conserve them.
