10 Day Uganda Gorilla, Wildlife and Cultural Safari

This 10-day Uganda safari brings together some of the country’s most distinctive wildlife, primate and cultural experiences in one carefully paced journey. Begin with a shoebill excursion through Mabamba Swamp and an evening of Ugandan music and dance at Ndere Cultural Centre, before continuing to Lake Mburo for wildlife drives, a night safari and a guided walking experience.

The journey then moves into southwestern Uganda for gorilla trekking in Mgahinga Gorilla National Park, golden monkey trekking and time around Lake Mutanda. From there, continue to Queen Elizabeth National Park for a Kazinga Channel boat safari, wildlife drives and chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge.

The safari also creates time to meet communities living alongside the protected areas. Visit coffee makers in Kyambura and the Kyambura Orphanage School to see some of the local initiatives supported through your safari. Explore Katinda Crater Lake and the Mirambi Twin Lakes on foot, with time to slow down and experience the countryside beyond the national parks.

Designed for travellers who want more than a sequence of game drives and primate treks, this journey combines wildlife, walking, culture, community connections and time to relax—while allowing each destination to be experienced at its own pace.

DAY 01

Mabamba Swamp and Ndere Cultural Centre

The Journey

Itinerary of Day 1

Your safari begins with a morning visit to Mabamba Swamp, a large wetland on the shores of Lake Victoria and one of Uganda’s best places to look for the shoebill.
Travel by boat into the papyrus channels with a local boat guide. The focus is on finding the shoebill while also watching the wetland birdlife along the channels. Depending on water levels and bird activity, you may encounter African fish eagles, kingfishers, herons, egrets, jacanas and other wetland species.
The boat lets you move quietly through narrow channels where walking isn't practical. For photographers and birders, the experience is as much about patience and observation as it is about finding the shoebill.

Later in the afternoon, continue to Ndere Cultural Centre for an introduction to Uganda through music, dance, food and traditional performance.
Rather than treating this as a simple evening show, the visit lets you learn about different cultural traditions through the performances. The Ndere Troupe regularly presents Ugandan dances, music and stories from different parts of the country.
Enjoy dinner and an evening performance before returning to your accommodation.

DAY 02

Transfer To Lake Mburo National Park

The Journey

Itinerary of Day 2

After breakfast, leave the Kampala/Entebbe area and begin the drive toward Lake Mburo National Park.
The journey takes you through central Uganda and the cattle-keeping country around the Ankole region. There will be opportunities for short stops along the way, depending on the group’s interests and arrival time.
Continue to Lake Mburo and check into your lodge for lunch and a short rest.

Later in the afternoon, enter the park for your first wildlife drive.
Lake Mburo is particularly good for species such as zebra, impala, eland, topi, buffalo, warthog and waterbuck, with the park’s mixture of open grassland, acacia woodland and wetland areas providing different habitats to explore. As daylight fades, return toward the lodge before beginning the night safari.

The night drive changes the focus from daytime grazing animals to species that become active after dark. With a ranger and spotlight, search the tracks and vegetation for nocturnal wildlife such as bushbuck, genet, civet, hare and other night-active species.
The drive is also an opportunity to observe how animals behave once the daytime safari traffic has disappeared.
Return to the lodge for dinner.

DAY 03

Walking Safari and Transfer to Lake Mburo to Kisoro

The Journey

Itinerary of Day 3

Walking gives the morning a completely different pace. Instead of covering large distances by vehicle, you move slowly with a ranger, looking at animal tracks, dung, feeding signs, plants, and smaller wildlife.
The walk can include areas around the park’s salt lick and other suitable sections depending on ranger guidance and current conditions. Lake Mburo is one of Uganda’s national parks where guided walking is an established wildlife activity. Return to the lodge for breakfast before checking out.

After breakfast begin the medium drive southwest toward Kisoro, passing through Uganda’s changing agricultural landscapes and into the highlands of southwestern Uganda.
The final section of the journey takes you into the volcanic country around Mgahinga and the Virunga ranges.
The remainder of the evening is deliberately kept free. After the long transfer, this is time to have dinner, settle in, and prepare for the following day’s gorilla trek.

DAY 04

Gorilla Trekking in Mgahinga – Lake Mutanda Canoe Cruise

The Journey

Itinerary of Day 4

After an early breakfast, transfer to Mgahinga Gorilla National Park for the gorilla trekking briefing.
The trek takes you into the forested slopes of the Virunga mountains in search of one of the habituated mountain gorilla families.
The duration of the trek depends on where the gorillas are located on the day. Once the family is found, the time with the gorillas is spent observing their behaviour while following the ranger team’s instructions.
Rather than rushing through the encounter, take time to watch the different members of the family: adults feeding, young gorillas playing, mothers caring for infants, and silverbacks maintaining their position within the group. After the trek, return to the lodge for lunch and a well-earned rest.

Later in the afternoon, head to Lake Mutanda, take a traditional canoe onto the lake for a relaxed paddle among the small islands and fishing areas. This is intentionally a quieter part of the day after the physical demands of gorilla trekking.

Golden Monkey Trekking – Relaxation & Optional Community Engagement

The Journey

Itinerary of Day 5

After breakfast, return to Mgahinga National Park for golden monkey trekking. The search takes you into the bamboo and montane forest, where these lively primates move through the vegetation in groups. Unlike mountain gorillas, golden monkeys are highly active, often moving quickly through the bamboo, feeding, climbing and interacting with one another, giving the trek a very different rhythm from the previous day’s gorilla experience.

After the trek, return to Kisoro for lunch and spend the afternoon at leisure. You may relax at the lodge, enjoy the views around Lake Mutanda, read, photograph the surrounding countryside or simply take time to recover after two consecutive trekking days.

For travellers interested in meeting local communities, an optional community visit can also be arranged around a locally run initiative, offering an opportunity to meet people involved in community activities and learn more about livelihoods around the conservation landscape.

Kisoro – Queen Elizabeth National Park – Kazinga Channel

The Journey

Itinerary of Day 6

After breakfast, check out and begin the journey from the highlands around Kisoro toward Queen Elizabeth National Park. The route gradually descends from the mountainous landscapes of southwestern Uganda into the lower country of the Albertine Rift, with time for a relaxed lunch stop along the way.

Later in the afternoon, head to the Kazinga Channel for a private boat safari along the waterway connecting Lake Edward and Lake George. The cruise offers an intimate perspective of the wildlife that gathers along the channel, with large numbers of hippos in the water and buffalo, elephants, waterbuck and other animals frequently coming down to drink.

The channel is also an excellent setting for birding, with numerous water-associated species along the shoreline and in the surrounding vegetation. For photographers, the low position from the boat provides natural views of wildlife at the water’s edge and opportunities to observe hippos and crocodiles at close range.

After the cruise, return to your lodge for dinner and a relaxed evening.

Wildlife, Salt Lakes and Local Life

The Journey

Itinerary of Day 7

Start the morning with a short game drive in Queen Elizabeth National Park, looking for elephants, buffaloes, Uganda kob, warthogs and other wildlife. If you come across lions, leopards or interesting animal activity, there is time to stop and watch.

Mid-morning, find a quiet spot in the park for a bush breakfast before continuing with the safari. The rest of the morning is kept flexible, with no need to rush from one place to another. Follow the wildlife, take your time and enjoy the park at your own pace.

Later, visit one of the park’s salt lakes, where flamingos and other birds may be seen around the water. You’ll also learn how salt is collected and processed and how the activity supports families living around the area.

Continue to a few local craft shops before returning to the lodge for a relaxed afternoon and diner

Chimpanzee Trekking in Kyambura Gorge and Community Conservation

The Journey

Itinerary of Day 8

After breakfast, drive to Kyambura Gorge for a guided chimpanzee trekking experience. The trail descends into the gorge and follows the forest along the Kyambura River, where a habituated chimpanzee community moves through the dense vegetation.

As you search for the chimpanzees, your ranger will help interpret signs of forest life and identify other primates, birds and wildlife encountered along the trail. Once the chimpanzees are located, spend time observing their behaviour and interactions before beginning the climb back out of the gorge.

Return to the lodge for lunch and time to rest before spending the afternoon connecting with two community initiatives supported through your safari.

Begin with a visit to local coffee makers in Kyambura. Meet the people involved in growing and processing their coffee, learn about their work and see how coffee production contributes to household livelihoods. Continue to Kyambura Orphanage School, where you can meet members of the school community and learn more about the work being done to support children in the area.

These visits add a more personal dimension to the safari, creating a direct connection between your journey and the people living around Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Return to the lodge in the evening for dinner.

Katinda and Mirambi Twin Lakes – A Slower Day in the Rift Valley

The Journey

Itinerary of Day 9

After breakfast, enjoy a slower-paced day exploring the crater lakes, gardens and countryside around the Queen Elizabeth area. Begin with Katinda Crater Lake, taking a guided walk through the surrounding landscape and nearby communities. Along the way, observe local farms, homes and everyday activities while learning how people make use of the land around these volcanic lakes.

Continue to the Mirambi Twin Lakes, where two closely positioned crater lakes form part of the surrounding volcanic landscape. Spend time walking, photographing the area and learning about the lakes and the communities that have made their homes around them.

The experience continues with a visit to local vanilla and cocoa gardens. Walk through the gardens with local growers, learn how vanilla and cocoa are cultivated and processed, and gain an insight into the role these crops play in household livelihoods. Depending on the season, there may also be an opportunity to see the crops at different stages of production and sample locally produced products.

Return to the lodge for lunch, followed by a relaxed afternoon. Enjoy the lodge, take photographs, read, have a massage or simply unwind after the more active days of trekking and wildlife viewing.

This slower final day brings together the landscapes, people and agricultural traditions that form an important part of life around Queen Elizabeth National Park.
