The Ultimate Primate Experience
For chimpanzee tracking, you have to go into the forests of Uganda to find wild chimpanzees. In conjunction with a guide, you observe their calls and movements as they feed, groom, climb through the trees, and interact with one another as they traverse the forest.
Kibale Forest is a popular place for chimpanzee tracking. Budongo Forest and Kyambura Gorge are other options, each offering a different forest setting.
Wild Compass Africa includes chimpanzee tracking in private Uganda safaris, often alongside game drives, boat trips, birdwatching, and visits to local communities.
What is chimp trekking?
Usually requiring participants to be at least 12 to 15 years old, chimpanzee trekking is a guided wildlife activity that involves hiking on foot through tropical forests in search of and observing wild, habituated chimpanzee troops in their natural habitat. Once the troop is located, visitors have a strict one-hour viewing window.
What to Expect on a Chimpanzee Trek
Chimpanzee trekking takes you on foot through Uganda’s forests in search of wild chimpanzees. The walk may follow muddy paths, uneven ground and thick undergrowth as guides look for signs of the chimpanzees’ movements. You may hear their calls before seeing them, then watch them feeding, grooming, climbing through the trees or moving across the forest floor.
The Trek Through the Forest
The experience begins with a briefing from the park team, covering the trekking process and rules for observing the chimpanzees. You then enter the forest with experienced guides. Finding a chimpanzee community may take an hour or several hours, depending on where the animals are and how far they have travelled.
The terrain can be slippery, and the walk may involve steep sections, dense vegetation and keeping up with the group as the chimpanzees move. Sturdy hiking boots, long trousers and clothing suitable for wet conditions are recommended.
Observing the Chimpanzees
Once the chimpanzees are found, visitors on a standard trek generally have up to one hour to observe them. During this time, you may see them feeding, grooming, calling to one another, caring for their young or moving between trees. Their behaviour and visibility vary, so every encounter is different.
The forest itself is also part of the experience. Depending on the location, you may see other primates, hear forest birds and notice the plants and insects that live beneath the canopy.
Age Limits and Trekking Rules
Minimum age requirements and permit conditions can vary by activity and location, so confirm the current rules when booking. Visitors must follow their guide’s instructions, keep the required distance from the chimpanzees and never feed or touch them. Anyone feeling unwell should inform the tracking team because human illnesses can spread to chimpanzees.
Wild Compass Africa can arrange chimpanzee trekking as part of a private Uganda safari, combining the forest experience with game drives, boat trips, birdwatching and cultural visits.
Chimpanzee trekking is available throughout the year, but forest conditions vary with the seasons.
June to September and December to February are generally drier periods in many parts of Uganda. Trails may be easier to navigate, although rain is still possible.
March to May and September to November tend to bring wetter conditions in many forest areas. Trails can become muddy and slippery, so sturdy footwear and suitable clothing are important.
Chimpanzees remain in the forest throughout the year. Sightings depend on their movements and the conditions on the day, while the best time for your trek may also depend on the forest you choose and your wider safari plans.
