Uganda’s hiking trails lead through mountain forests, past waterfalls and up volcanic slopes. In the Rwenzori Mountains, the terrain becomes more demanding, while the Sipi Falls area offers shorter hikes through the highlands and past its waterfalls.
From mountain trails and volcanic summits to waterfalls, forest paths and remote highlands, Uganda offers hiking routes for different interests and fitness levels.
Wild Compass Africa plans hiking journeys around your interests, fitness level, and available time. You might choose a day hike to a waterfall, a climb through the Virunga Mountains, a trek on Mount Elgon, or a longer expedition into the Rwenzori Mountains. Each route offers its own terrain, challenges, and views.
Rwenzori Mountains
Known for their rugged terrain and changing vegetation zones, the Rwenzori Mountains offer some of Uganda’s most demanding trekking. Routes pass through forest, bamboo, moorland, and high-altitude landscapes, with longer expeditions reaching the higher peaks. Shorter walks and hikes are also available in selected areas.
Mount Elgon and Sipi Falls
Explore trails around Sipi’s waterfalls, walk through the surrounding highlands or plan a longer trek on Mount Elgon. This region is well suited to travellers who want mountain scenery, outdoor activity and opportunities to learn about local coffee-growing communities.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park
The Virunga volcanoes offer challenging hikes through montane vegetation towards high ridges and summits. Mount Gahinga, Mount Sabinyo and Mount Muhabura each provide a different experience. These hikes require preparation and must be arranged according to park requirements and current conditions.
Bwindi and the Southwestern Highlands
Beyond gorilla trekking, the wider Bwindi region offers opportunities to explore forest trails, hills and rural landscapes on suitable guided walks. These experiences can complement a primate safari or form part of a longer journey through southwestern Uganda.
Mount Moroto and Karamoja
For travellers drawn to less-visited regions, Mount Moroto offers a mountain experience in northeastern Uganda. Hiking can be combined with a wider Karamoja itinerary, including cultural visits arranged with local guidance and respect for community preferences.
Hiking is as much about the journey as the destination. Along the trail, you can observe changes in vegetation, look for birds, photograph landscapes, and learn about the environments you pass through. Depending on the route, there may be opportunities to meet local guides and discover how people live and work in the surrounding highlands.
Some hikes are suitable for a single day, while others require several days on the mountain. We help match the route to your interests and experience rather than treating every hike as a summit challenge.
Every hiking journey requires a little preparation. We consider the length and difficulty of the route, elevation, weather, accommodation, equipment, and the time needed to travel between destinations. For higher-altitude treks, proper acclimatisation and suitable preparation are essential.
Hikes are arranged with the appropriate guides and authorities, where required. Routes, access, and conditions can vary, so the final plan depends on current regulations and local guidance.
Whether you want to add a waterfall hike to your Uganda safari or dedicate several days to the mountains, Wild Compass Africa can help plan a journey that fits your interests and abilities.
