Uganda’s rivers, lakes and wetlands offer some of the best opportunities to experience its wildlife and birdlife from the water. At Wild Compass Africa, we include boating experiences in tailor-made journeys for travellers interested in wildlife, birding, photography, local culture and leisure.
Cruise along the Nile in Murchison Falls National Park, watch hippos and waterbirds along the Kazinga Channel, or explore the papyrus waterways of Mabamba Wetland in search of the shoebill. For a quieter experience, take a boat trip across Lake Bunyonyi or Lake Mutanda, where islands, hills and distant volcanic peaks shape the view.
Boat trips in Murchison Falls National Park and Queen Elizabeth National Park offer a different way to observe wildlife. Along the Nile, you may see hippos, crocodiles and animals coming to the river to drink. On the Kazinga Channel, hippos, buffaloes, elephants and numerous waterbirds can often be seen along the banks.
These excursions also offer good opportunities for wildlife photography, with animals viewed from the water and the surrounding landscape forming a natural backdrop.
Uganda’s wetlands, lakes and rivers support a wide variety of birdlife. Mabamba Wetland is particularly well known for shoebill excursions, with local boat guides navigating narrow channels through the papyrus. The Nile, Kazinga Channel and Lake Mburo also offer opportunities to observe waterbirds and other species associated with aquatic habitats.
Birding trips can be arranged as part of a wider safari or as a dedicated excursion for birdwatchers and photographers. Sightings depend on conditions and the movements of birds.
Boating in Uganda is not limited to wildlife viewing. Lake Bunyonyi offers canoeing and boat trips among its islands, while Lake Mutanda provides views of the surrounding highlands and Virunga volcanoes. On Lake Victoria, boat excursions can be combined with island visits and time by the lakeshore, depending on the itinerary.
These experiences are well suited to travellers who want a slower pace between wildlife activities, or who wish to include time on the water during a honeymoon, family holiday or private safari.
