Nestled in the southwestern mountains of Rwanda, Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of the oldest and most biodiverse rainforests in Africa. Dating back millions of years, this ancient jungle is a sanctuary for primates, rare birds, orchids, waterfalls, and thick, misty canopy trails.
Unlike the volcanic forests of the north, Nyungwe offers a completely different experience: lush emerald hills filled with chimpanzees, playful monkeys, and the famous Canopy Walkway suspended 70 meters above the rainforest floor — a true highlight for nature enthusiasts.
What Makes Nyungwe Special
Chimpanzee Trekking
Nyungwe is home to two habituated chimpanzee families, offering early morning treks through the forest to observe our closest relatives. The trekking is exciting and active, with chimps calling, swinging, and feeding in the treetops.
Canopy Walkway Experience
This is one of Rwanda’s most iconic attractions: a 160-meter suspended bridge high up in the forest canopy. It offers breathtaking views over the treetops and valleys. Ideal after chimp trekking or for anyone afraid of missing out on adventure.
Other Primates & Wildlife
Nyungwe hosts 13 different primate species — including L’Hoest’s monkey, colobus monkeys (with troops of up to 400 individuals), grey-cheeked mangabeys, and blue monkeys. It’s also one of Africa’s best spots for primate variety viewing in a single park.
Birdwatching Paradise
Over 300 bird species are recorded here, making Nyungwe a world-class birding destination. Rare species include the Ruwenzori turaco, Grauer’s swamp warbler, and many Albertine Rift endemics.
Hiking Trails & Waterfalls
With more than 130 km of hiking trails, Nyungwe offers guided walks ranging from 1-hour strolls to full-day treks leading to majestic waterfalls, orchids, and secret forest viewpoints.
