12 Day Kenya Photography Safari – Maasai Mara and Amboseli

Upon arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, you will be welcomed by your Wild Compass Africa safari team and assisted with your onward connection to the Mara. Rather than spending several hours travelling by road, fly from Nairobi to an airstrip serving Mara North Conservancy, allowing you to reach the wilderness with more time available for photography.

On arrival, meet your safari guide and transfer to your camp in Mara North. After lunch and a short rest, head out for your first photographic drive through the conservancy.

Mara North offers a different setting from the main Maasai Mara National Reserve, with lower vehicle density in many areas and a strong focus on conservation and controlled tourism. Your first afternoon is an opportunity to settle into the landscape, photograph the wildlife around camp and begin searching for lions, elephants, giraffes, buffalo, zebras and other plains species. Continue with a full-day photographic drive and carry a picnic lunch so you can remain in the field rather than returning to camp during the middle of the day. This allows greater flexibility when an interesting sighting develops and gives you time to wait for behaviour rather than rushing between locations.

Depending on the camp and arrangements, the evening may also provide opportunities for a night drive, offering a completely different photographic experience with nocturnal wildlife.

After breakfast, transfer towards your next camp, entering the National Reserve and continuing your exploration of the wider Mara ecosystem. The route itself becomes part of the safari, with opportunities to stop whenever wildlife or photographic conditions make it worthwhile.

After lunch and some time to settle into camp, head out for an afternoon game drive. Begin exploring the central and northern areas of the reserve, looking for big cats and large concentrations of plains wildlife.

As the afternoon light softens, concentrate on wildlife portraits and environmental photographs before returning to camp after the evening game drive.

Start before sunrise for a full day dedicated to photography in the main Maasai Mara National Reserve. The early hours provide some of the best conditions for working with predators and wildlife behaviour before the heat of the day develops.

Depart early with a packed breakfast or picnic lunch and cross towards the western side of the Mara. The Triangle has extensive open grasslands, the Mara River and the Oloololo Escarpment, creating different backgrounds and perspectives from those encountered in the central reserve.

Spend the morning searching for predators, elephants, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and other wildlife while making use of the changing light across the open plains. The wider landscapes can be particularly rewarding for environmental wildlife photography, especially when animals can be framed against the escarpment or distant plains.

Remain in the Triangle through the middle of the day before continuing with afternoon photography. Return to your camp in the evening after a full day in the field.

Your final full day in the Mara is dedicated to the southern part of the ecosystem around the Sand River and the Tanzania border.

The Sand River area provides opportunities to photograph large herds, elephants, zebras, giraffes and predators, while the riverine environment adds another set of backgrounds and compositions.

If travelling during the Great Migration period, this area can also provide opportunities to photograph wildebeest and zebra movements between the Serengeti and Maasai Mara, although wildlife movements are seasonal and cannot be guaranteed.

Use the afternoon for further wildlife photography before making the return journey to camp. This final Mara day can also be adjusted according to the strongest photographic opportunities encountered earlier in the safari, allowing you to revisit a productive area or species rather than following a rigid route.

Transfer to the appropriate Mara airstrip for your scheduled flight towards Amboseli, connecting through Nairobi where required by the flight schedule. Flying between the two safari regions saves a considerable amount of road travel and keeps the journey focused on wildlife and photography.

On arrival in the Amboseli area, meet your guide and transfer to your lodge. Depending on flight arrival time, head out for an afternoon game drive and begin photographing the park's famous elephant herds, plains wildlife and wetland areas.

When weather conditions are clear, Mount Kilimanjaro provides an impressive backdrop, particularly later in the afternoon when the light becomes softer.

Begin early with a full-day photographic safari in Amboseli. The park is particularly well known for its large elephant herds, and the morning provides opportunities to photograph them while temperatures are cooler and the light is softer.

Spend time observing elephant behaviour rather than simply moving between sightings, looking for interactions between adults and calves, feeding, dust behaviour and movement across the open plains.

Amboseli also supports buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, giraffes and a variety of antelope species.

Carry a picnic lunch and continue exploring through the afternoon. When Kilimanjaro is visible, your guide can look for opportunities to combine wildlife and mountain landscapes in the same frame.

The park's water sources attract elephants, hippos and a variety of birdlife, while the surrounding grasslands support giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffalo and antelope. These contrasting habitats provide opportunities for both close wildlife portraits and wider environmental photographs.

Continue with a full-day drive and picnic lunch in the park. The afternoon can be adapted according to current wildlife activity and weather conditions, with particular attention to the changing relationship between animals, landscape and Mount Kilimanjaro.

Return to camp after the evening drive for dinner and time to review the day's photographs.
