Gorilla trekking Rwanda volcanoes national park

Meet Rwanda’s mountain gorillas in the forests of the Virunga Mountains

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park offers an opportunity to encounter mountain gorillas in their natural habitat, among the bamboo thickets, dense undergrowth, and mist-covered slopes of Rwanda’s Virunga Mountains. Accompanied by experienced park trackers and guides, you venture into the forest in search of a habituated gorilla family, observing its members as they feed, rest, move through the vegetation, and interact with one another.

The experience is personal and unpredictable. You may find a young gorilla playing nearby, a mother tending to her infant, or a silverback keeping watch over his family. Each encounter unfolds differently, shaped by the gorillas’ natural behaviour and the forest around them.

For Wild Compass Africa, gorilla trekking is more than an opportunity to photograph one of Africa’s most remarkable primates. It is a chance to understand the importance of protecting their habitat and supporting responsible wildlife tourism.

Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park

Located in northwestern Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park protects part of the Virunga mountain range, a chain of volcanic peaks shared by Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Its montane forests and bamboo zones provide habitat for endangered mountain gorillas, alongside golden monkeys and a variety of forest birds.

Trekking begins at the park headquarters in Kinigi, where visitors receive a briefing before being assigned to a gorilla family. With park guides and trackers leading the way, you travel to the designated starting point and continue on foot through the forest.

The terrain can range from relatively gentle paths to steep slopes, tangled vegetation, and muddy ground. The time needed to locate the gorillas varies, depending on where the family has moved and the forest conditions.

Once the family is found, visitors may spend up to one hour observing and photographing the gorillas, following their guides' instructions throughout the encounter.

Meeting the Mountain Gorillas

Mountain gorillas live in social groups with strong family relationships. Their daily lives revolve around feeding, resting, travelling and caring for their young. Watching these interactions offers a glimpse into the social behaviour of one of our closest living relatives.

The encounter may bring you close enough to notice the silverback’s imposing presence, the careful attention mothers give their infants, or the curiosity and playfulness of younger gorillas. Their expressions, movements, and quiet interactions reveal a side of wildlife that is difficult to appreciate from a distance.

Although the gorillas are accustomed to the presence of visitors, they remain wild animals. Their behaviour cannot be directed or guaranteed, and the priority is always to observe them without causing disturbance.

Photography is permitted under park rules, but flash must not be used. A camera with a suitable lens can help you capture the encounter while respecting the space the gorillas need.

What to Expect on Your Gorilla Trek

Your day begins with an early transfer to Kinigi for registration, a briefing, and allocation to a habituated gorilla family. After the briefing, you travel to the starting point for your assigned trek.

The walk takes place through the forest, with the pace and terrain varying according to the location of the gorillas. Your guides and trackers help navigate the route and share information about the forest and its wildlife along the way.

When the gorillas are located, your group spends up to one hour observing them. They may be feeding, resting, moving through the undergrowth, or interacting with other family members. Their movements determine what you see, so every encounter is different.

After the visit, you return through the forest and meet your driver for the transfer back to your lodge. The remainder of the day can be kept relaxed, allowing time to rest or enjoy the surrounding countryside.

When to Go Gorilla Trekking

Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is available throughout the year. However, seasonal rainfall can influence trail conditions and the difficulty of the hike.

The drier periods, generally from June to September and December to February, often provide more manageable walking conditions. These months are popular with visitors, so planning is particularly important.

From March to May and again around October to November, rainfall can make forest trails slippery and the terrain more demanding. The forest is often lush and green during wetter periods, offering attractive conditions for photography, although rain can occur at any time of year.

Mountain gorillas do not follow a fixed viewing schedule, and the length or difficulty of a trek cannot be guaranteed in any season. The best travel period depends on your preferences, schedule, and tolerance for challenging walking conditions.

Preparing for Your Trek

Gorilla trekking requires a reasonable level of fitness. Depending on the gorilla family’s location, the walk can involve steep ascents, uneven ground, muddy trails and thick vegetation. Trekking duration varies, and visitors should be prepared for several hours on foot.

We recommend preparing with regular walks or hikes before travelling and bringing suitable equipment for wet, cool forest conditions.

Useful items include:

  • Sturdy hiking boots with good grip.
  • Long trousers and a long-sleeved top to protect against vegetation.
  • A waterproof jacket and comfortable layers.
  • Gardening gloves for holding vegetation where necessary.
  • Drinking water and a small daypack.
  • A camera with flash disabled.
  • A walking stick or porter assistance, if needed.

The park has strict rules to protect gorillas from human diseases and minimise disturbance. Visitors must follow their guides’ instructions, maintain the required distance, keep their voices low, avoid touching or feeding gorillas, and carry all rubbish out of the forest. Anyone unwell with a potentially infectious illness should inform the operator before the trek and follow the park’s health guidance. The minimum age for gorilla trekking in Rwanda is 15 years.

Gorilla Trekking Permits and Planning

Gorilla trekking requires a valid permit issued through the Rwanda Development Board. Permits are limited, and availability can be particularly tight during popular travel periods. Booking well in advance gives you a better opportunity to secure your preferred dates.

Wild Compass Africa can help organise the practical arrangements for your experience, including permit planning, accommodation, transfers and a wider Rwanda itinerary suited to your travel preferences.

The location of your accommodation, your arrival arrangements and the time needed to reach Kinigi should all be considered when planning the trek. We recommend allowing sufficient time around your trekking date rather than arranging an overly rushed schedule.

Extend Your Rwanda Experience

Gorilla trekking can form the centrepiece of a short Rwanda escape or be combined with other destinations and experiences across the country.

Consider exploring Kigali and its cultural and historical sites, discovering the rainforest trails and birdlife of Nyungwe Forest National Park, or enjoying time beside Lake Kivu. For travellers seeking a broader wildlife experience, Akagera National Park offers game drives, savannah wildlife and boat trips on Lake Ihema.

Our team can help bring these experiences together into a private journey that suits your available time, interests and preferred style of travel.
