4 Day South Sudan Tour – Toposa and Jie Villages

Safari Overview

Extraordinary 4-day cultural safari through South Sudan, one of Africa’s least-explored yet most culturally rich destinations. This journey takes you deep into the heart of traditional pastoralist communities—the Toposa and Jie people—who still maintain an authentic nomadic lifestyle centered around cattle keeping. Unlike conventional wildlife safaris, this tour is a rare cultural immersion, offering intimate experiences with two of the most resilient and unique tribes of East Africa.

Travelers will engage in authentic daily practices such as cattle herding, milking, and traditional music and dance, while learning about the unique challenges and traditions of these communities, including their history of cattle raids and pastoral migrations. Beyond the activities, this trip provides an unmatched opportunity to witness South Sudan as a truly “virgin” cultural tourism destination—raw, unspoiled, and deeply traditional.

Your Itinerary

Day 1 – Arrival in Juba and Transfer to Toposa Village
Your journey begins upon arrival in Juba, South Sudan’s capital. You will be warmly welcomed by your safari guide and immediately start your journey into the cultural heartland. Drive across scenic countryside toward Toposa village, where you’ll be introduced to a community whose way of life revolves entirely around cattle keeping.
On arrival, settle into your camp and prepare for your first evening among the Toposa. As the sun sets, you will have a chance to interact with villagers, learn about their traditions, and understand how cattle play a central role not only as a food source but also as a measure of wealth and social standing. Overnight at the camp.

Day 2 – Full Cultural Experience with the Toposa People
Wake up to the sounds of the pastoral community beginning their day. Spend the full day engaging with the Toposa, visiting cattle enclosures, watching herding practices, and even trying your hand at milking cows. You’ll have the chance to observe how children gradually take on responsibilities, starting with tending goats before progressing to larger herds.
Later, immerse yourself in cultural expression—wear traditional dress, enjoy the rhythms of local music, and take part in spirited dances that are integral to the Toposa identity. If available, take a camel ride through the village outskirts, giving you a wider view of the pastoral landscape. Evening storytelling around the fire completes the day.

Day 3 – Journey to Jie Village
After breakfast, depart for Jie village, another pastoralist community closely related to the Toposa. The drive itself offers insight into the rugged beauty of South Sudan’s landscapes and the scattered homesteads that dot the plains. On arrival, you’ll be welcomed by the Jie people and introduced to their culture.
Spend the day learning about their way of life, which is similar yet distinct from the Toposa. Enjoy cultural performances featuring music and dance, share moments of conversation with elders, and understand how both tribes navigate challenges such as cattle raids and seasonal migrations. Overnight in the village camp.

Day 4 – Return to Juba and Departure
Enjoy your final morning in Jie village with a hearty breakfast before beginning the return journey to Juba. As you travel back, reflect on the deep cultural immersion and unique encounters you’ve had over the past four days. Your guide will drop you at Juba International Airport, marking the end of this unforgettable South Sudan cultural safari.
