4 Day South Sudan Tour – Toposa and Jie Villages

Your journey begins with your arrival in Juba, South Sudan’s capital, where you will meet your guide and begin the drive toward Toposa territory. Leaving the city behind, the landscape gradually opens into remote countryside, with scattered settlements and pastoral communities along the way.

On arrival, settle into your camp and begin your introduction to the Toposa people, one of South Sudan’s distinctive pastoralist communities. Spend time with local residents, learning about their traditions, cattle-centered way of life, family structures, and connection to the surrounding land.

As the day folds, experience the quieter rhythm of village life and enjoy your first night in the community.

Wake to the sounds of daily life in the community and spend a full day experiencing the world of the Toposa. Visit cattle enclosures and observe traditional herding practices, learning how livestock influence family life, social relationships, and community traditions.

Depending on local arrangements, you may participate in simple aspects of daily life such as milking cattle, while your local guide provides context about pastoral traditions and the different responsibilities carried by adults and children.

Later, experience the cultural side of the community through traditional music, dance, dress, and storytelling. If locally available and appropriate, a camel experience can offer another perspective of the surrounding pastoral landscape. End the day around the evening fire, listening to stories and reflecting on the experiences of the day.

After breakfast, leave Toposa territory and continue toward Jie territory, travelling through remote landscapes and pastoral settlements. The journey itself provides an opportunity to appreciate the scale and rugged character of South Sudan’s countryside.

On arrival, meet members of the Jie community and begin exploring their way of life. While sharing cultural and pastoral connections with the Toposa, the Jie have their own traditions, social structures, and experiences shaped by their environment.

Spend time in the village, meeting families and elders, learning about cattle keeping, seasonal movements, traditional practices, and the role of community in everyday life.

Later, enjoy traditional music and dance, subject to local arrangements, before settling into your village camp for the evening.
