Comfortable safari journeys with flexible pacing, quality accommodation and wildlife experiences chosen around you
An African safari does not have to mean long days, strenuous activities or a tightly packed schedule.
With a private safari and thoughtful planning, travellers can enjoy East Africa's wildlife at a comfortable pace, with time to rest between activities and the flexibility to adjust the day when needed.
For many mature travellers, the attraction is not simply seeing wildlife. It is having the time to appreciate the landscape, spend longer at a good sighting, enjoy a quiet afternoon at the lodge, or combine a classic safari with cultural and scenic experiences.
At Wild Compass Africa, we design private safaris around each traveller's interests, preferred pace and level of comfort.
Choosing the Right Safari
East Africa offers very different safari experiences, and the best choice depends on what you want from the journey.
Kenya is well suited to travellers looking for classic savannah wildlife, particularly in the Masai Mara and Amboseli. The country's established safari infrastructure also provides a wide choice of lodges and private safari options.
Tanzania offers some of East Africa's most iconic wildlife landscapes, including the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. A carefully planned route can reduce unnecessary movement and allow more time in each destination.
Uganda is ideal for travellers who want variety. Game drives in Queen Elizabeth or Murchison Falls can be combined with boat safaris, birding and cultural experiences. Travellers interested in primates can also add chimpanzee or gorilla trekking where appropriate.
Rwanda offers compact travel distances and a combination of Kigali, Akagera and Volcanoes National Park. It can be particularly convenient for travellers who prefer shorter road transfers between destinations.
South Sudan is a different proposition altogether. Its remote cultural journeys can be rewarding for experienced travellers who are comfortable with simpler conditions and more demanding logistics. These trips should be discussed carefully before booking.
Safari Experiences at a Comfortable Pace
The great advantage of a private safari is flexibility.
Game drives can be planned around your preferred start time, with breaks whenever needed. Boat safaris offer another way to experience wildlife without extended periods on foot, while birding and cultural visits can be incorporated according to your interests.
For example, the Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park and the Nile at Murchison Falls provide excellent opportunities to see hippos, elephants, crocodiles and birds from the water.
Walking activities are not essential to enjoying a safari. Where a particular activity involves more physical effort, alternative experiences can usually be arranged.
Gorilla Trekking for Mature Travellers
Gorilla trekking is possible for many older travellers, but it requires more careful planning than a conventional game drive.
The trek takes place in mountainous forest terrain, and the difficulty can vary considerably depending on the location of the gorilla family and the conditions on the day.
Porters can assist with carrying equipment and providing physical support, while in Uganda, specialised support options such as sedan chairs may be available for travellers with limited mobility.
The important thing is to discuss your abilities honestly before the trek. Your safari can then be planned around the most appropriate trekking option, accommodation and support.
For travellers who would prefer to avoid strenuous trekking altogether, Uganda and Rwanda offer plenty of other wildlife and cultural experiences.
Accommodation and Comfort
Where you stay can make a significant difference to the overall safari.
We look for accommodation that suits the route while considering practical details such as room access, walking distances, private bathrooms, meals and opportunities to rest between activities.
For longer safaris, we also avoid unnecessary changes of accommodation where possible. Spending two or three nights in one location can make the journey considerably more relaxed than moving every day.
Private safari vehicles provide another important advantage. Rather than following a fixed group schedule, you can stop when you want, return to the lodge when you need a rest, or spend longer at a wildlife sighting that interests you.
Health, Safety and Practical Planning
A comfortable safari begins with realistic planning.
Before travelling, it is worth discussing the itinerary with your doctor, particularly if you have specific mobility requirements or other health considerations. Comprehensive travel insurance with appropriate medical and evacuation cover is also important.
We also recommend telling us in advance about any dietary requirements, mobility considerations, preferred room arrangements or other practical needs.
The goal is not to remove adventure from the safari. It is to make sure the adventure is enjoyable rather than unnecessarily exhausting.
When to Travel
East Africa can be visited throughout the year, although conditions vary between destinations.
The drier months are generally popular for wildlife viewing and easier access to many outdoor activities. Wetter periods bring greener landscapes, seasonal changes in wildlife behaviour and excellent birding opportunities.
Rather than choosing one season for the whole region, we plan around the destinations you want to visit and the experiences that matter most to you.
