4 Day Rwanda–Uganda Double Gorilla Trekking Safari

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by your Wild Compass Africa guide and briefed about your upcoming Rwanda–Uganda double gorilla trekking safari.

If your arrival time permits, begin with a short Kigali city experience, including a visit to the Kigali Genocide Memorial, where you will learn about Rwanda’s history, resilience and journey of reconciliation.

Afterward, depart Kigali and drive north towards Volcanoes National Park, enjoying the scenic countryside along the way. The journey takes you through Rwanda’s famous rolling hills, lush farmland and vibrant local communities.

Before reaching your lodge, enjoy a cultural experience at the Iby’Iwacu Cultural Centre in Kinigi. Experience traditional music and dance while learning about Rwandan culture, traditions and community life around Volcanoes National Park.

Continue to your lodge near the park for check-in, dinner and a relaxing evening ahead of your first gorilla trek.

After an early breakfast, proceed to the Volcanoes National Park headquarters for your gorilla trekking briefing.

Accompanied by experienced rangers and trackers, begin your trek through the bamboo forests and volcanic slopes of the Virunga Mountains in search of a habituated mountain gorilla family. Once you locate the gorillas, spend a magical hour observing them in their natural habitat as they feed, groom, play and interact within the forest.

After the trek, return to your lodge for lunch and some time to refresh.

Later, visit the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund Museum in Musanze to learn about Dian Fossey’s pioneering conservation work and the continuing efforts to protect Rwanda’s mountain gorillas.

In the afternoon, cross the Rwanda–Uganda border and continue towards Lake Mutanda, a beautiful high-altitude lake surrounded by volcanic peaks and lush hills.

Arrive in the evening and check into your lakeside lodge for dinner and overnight.

Today marks the second major highlight of your journey as you undertake your second gorilla trekking experience, this time in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park in Uganda

After breakfast, transfer to the appropriate park headquarters for your gorilla trekking briefing before entering the ancient rainforest in search of a different habituated gorilla family.

The trek takes you deep into Bwindi’s dense vegetation and challenging terrain, offering an entirely different forest experience from the volcanic landscapes of Rwanda. Once you locate the gorillas, spend up to one magical hour observing these remarkable animals in their natural habitat.

After the trek, return to Mutanda Lake Resort for lunch and time to rest after the demanding forest experience.

Later in the afternoon, enjoy a peaceful boat ride on Lake Mutanda. Surrounded by volcanic peaks, green hills and small islands, the lake provides a relaxing way to end an extraordinary day of gorilla trekking.

Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
