12 Day Uganda Photo Safari: Big Five, Gorillas and Chimpanzees

Your safari begins in Entebbe, where you will be met on arrival and transferred to your accommodation.

The first day is intentionally easy. After your journey, there is time to settle in, check your camera equipment and batteries, organise memory cards and prepare for the first photography session the following morning.

If your arrival time allows, you can spend some time around the lodge or nearby Lake Victoria environment with your camera. This can be a relaxed introduction to Uganda's birdlife and tropical setting without turning the arrival day into a full activity day.

 An early start takes you towards Mabamba Swamp, where you will board a traditional canoe and enter the papyrus channels in search of the shoebill.

This is one of the days where patience matters. Rather than rushing through the wetland, time is allowed to search different channels and observe the birds before positioning the canoe for photography. The shoebill can be photographed standing quietly in the marsh, walking through vegetation, hunting or, if conditions allow, in flight.

The canoe also gives you a low perspective over the water and papyrus, which can work particularly well for environmental images rather than only tight portraits.

The morning session is followed by time to rest and review images. Depending on conditions and the day's schedule, a later session can be arranged around the wetland or nearby areas for another opportunity in softer evening light.

After breakfast, leave the Entebbe area and travel towards Lake Mburo National Park.

The landscape changes as you move away from Lake Victoria, with cultivated areas and rural communities gradually giving way to the open country around the park.

After settling into your lodge, the main photography session begins in the late afternoon with an evening game drive.

Lake Mburo is particularly suited to slower wildlife photography because of its mixture of open grassland, woodland and wetland habitats. Depending on the day's sightings, attention can be given to zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, warthog, topi and other wildlife, as well as the park's birdlife.

As daylight fades, return for a night safari. The photographic approach changes completely after dark. Instead of looking for conventional portraits, the focus becomes nocturnal behaviour, eyeshine, silhouettes and animals encountered under the spotlight.

This gives the photographer a completely different set of images from the daytime work.

Rise early for a morning game drive, making use of the first light before the day's heat builds.

The morning is particularly useful for photography because wildlife can still be active, while the softer light allows for more controlled exposures and cleaner backgrounds. There is also time to work on images of the park itself rather than photographing only individual animals.

After breakfast, continue towards Mgahinga in southwestern Uganda.

The journey gradually climbs into the highlands, changing from the open country around Lake Mburo to cultivated hills and volcanic landscapes. There will be opportunities for landscape and rural-life photography along the route, subject to the day's timing and road conditions.

Arrive in the Mgahinga area and settle into your lodge ahead of the following day's gorilla trek.

Today is dedicated to mountain gorilla trekking in Mgahinga.

After the park briefing, enter the forest with your trackers and guides. The walk itself is part of the photographic experience, as the forest provides opportunities for images of vegetation, mountain landscapes, forest details and other wildlife encountered along the trail.

Once the gorilla family is located, the priority is observation before photography. The group may be feeding, resting, moving through vegetation, climbing or interacting with one another.

The forest environment can make photography challenging. Light changes constantly beneath the canopy, backgrounds can be busy and subjects may disappear behind vegetation. Rather than forcing every image to be a portrait, the aim is to capture behaviour and the relationship between the gorillas and their surroundings.

After the trek, return to the lodge with time to rest and review the day's images.

Another early start takes you into Mgahinga Forest for golden monkey tracking.

Golden monkeys move quickly through the forest and bamboo zones, so this is a different photographic challenge from gorilla trekking. Instead of waiting for large subjects sitting close to the ground, you may need to anticipate movement, follow groups through vegetation and react quickly when an animal pauses.

There may be opportunities for portraits, feeding behaviour, movement through bamboo and wider environmental photographs showing the monkeys in their habitat.

The remainder of the day is deliberately less demanding, allowing time to rest, download or review images and prepare for the next day's gorilla experience.

Today brings a second opportunity to photograph mountain gorillas, this time in Bwindi.

Having already photographed gorillas in Mgahinga, the second experience allows you to approach the subject differently. Gorilla encounters are never identical: the forest, family group, light and behaviour can all change the photographic possibilities.

The trek takes place in Bwindi's dense forest, where the emphasis is again on observing the group and working with the conditions rather than trying to manufacture a particular image.

This second gorilla experience is particularly valuable for photographers because it gives you another opportunity to refine your approach — perhaps concentrating more on behaviour, environmental portraits, wider compositions or interactions rather than simply collecting close-up portraits.

After the trek, return to your accommodation and have time to rest.

After breakfast, leave the Bwindi highlands and travel towards Queen Elizabeth National Park.

The journey takes you from the forested mountains back into lower, warmer country, with changing vegetation and views of the Rift Valley landscape along the way.

After arriving in the Queen Elizabeth area, the main photographic activity is an evening boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel.

From the water, the perspective is very different from a game drive. Hippos can often be seen close to the shoreline, while crocodiles, elephants, buffalo and numerous waterbirds may be encountered along the banks.

The later light can be particularly useful for photography, especially when animals are positioned against open water or the shoreline. The boat also allows you to work on reflections, silhouettes, environmental portraits and interactions between animals.

Today is dedicated to wildlife photography within Queen Elizabeth National Park.

Begin with an early morning safari, when temperatures are cooler and wildlife activity is generally higher. The morning session is about searching rather than following a fixed checklist. Depending on where animals are located, time may be spent with elephants, buffalo, antelope, lions and other wildlife encountered in the area.

The photographer can also work on the landscape itself — open grassland, woodland, crater-lake country and the relationship between wildlife and habitat.

After returning to the lodge for lunch and a break, head out again for an evening safari.

The second session gives you another chance to photograph animals encountered in the morning, while also working with a completely different quality of light. The goal is to stay flexible and spend more time with worthwhile subjects rather than constantly moving in search of something new.

The morning begins with chimpanzee trekking in Kyambura Gorge.

This is a very different photographic environment from the savannah. The gorge is enclosed by forest and vegetation, and chimpanzees can move quickly through the trees and undergrowth.

The emphasis is therefore on behaviour, movement and moments when the animals become visible between branches and leaves. Patience is important, particularly when the chimpanzees are high in the canopy or moving rapidly.

After the trek, continue towards Kibale Forest.

The afternoon is primarily for the transfer and settling into your accommodation, giving you time to prepare equipment for the following day's dedicated chimpanzee experience.

Today is dedicated to chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest, giving you a second opportunity to work with one of Uganda's most fascinating primates.

The forest offers a completely different photographic setting from Kyambura. The dense vegetation, tall trees and filtered light mean that photographs may range from intimate portraits to wider images showing chimpanzees within the forest.

Chimpanzees are active animals, and the best photographs often come from watching what they are doing rather than simply waiting for them to face the camera. Feeding, grooming, travelling, resting and interactions within the group can all create stronger images.

There will also be opportunities to photograph the surrounding forest and other primates or birdlife encountered during the trek.

This final full photography day gives you time to work deliberately rather than rushing between different activities.
