Park Overview

Chimpanzees and Forests of Lake Tanganyika

On the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania, Gombe Stream National Park is a small protected area with an important place in the history of wildlife research and conservation. Covering approximately 52 square kilometres, the park is known internationally for the pioneering chimpanzee research of Dr Jane Goodall, whose observations transformed scientific understanding of wild chimpanzee behaviour.
Gombe’s landscape rises from the lakeshore into steep, forested valleys crossed by streams and walking trails. Woodland, tropical forest and open patches of vegetation support chimpanzees, several other primate species and a variety of birds. Beyond the forest, Lake Tanganyika adds another dimension to the park, with its remarkable freshwater biodiversity and mountain-backed shoreline.
Established as a national park in 1968, Gombe remains closely associated with long-term primate research and chimpanzee conservation. Its remote setting and lack of conventional game-drive roads mean that visitors explore on foot, accompanied by park guides, with boat transfers providing access from Kigoma.
Chimpanzee tracking is the main attraction, but Gombe also rewards visitors interested in birdwatching, forest walks, waterfalls and the history of wildlife research. For travellers exploring western Tanzania, it offers a distinctive experience that combines close observation of wild primates with the natural beauty of Lake Tanganyika.

Safari Activities in Gombe Stream National Park

Gombe Stream National Park lies on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania. Its forested slopes, narrow valleys and lakeside setting are closely associated with the study and conservation of wild chimpanzees, making it one of Tanzania’s most distinctive destinations for primate experiences.

Chimpanzee tracking is the main attraction, but visitors can also explore forest trails, look for birds and other primates, visit waterfalls and enjoy views across Lake Tanganyika. Access is generally by boat from Kigoma, adding a sense of remoteness to the journey.

1. Chimpanzee Trekking

Chimpanzee tracking is the principal reason many travellers visit Gombe. Accompanied by park guides and trackers, visitors walk through forest and along steep valley trails in search of habituated chimpanzee communities.

Once the chimpanzees are located, visitors may observe feeding, grooming, social interactions and movement through the forest. Encounters take place under park rules designed to protect both the animals and visitors. TANAPA guidelines specify a maximum viewing time of one hour per group, although finding chimpanzees is never guaranteed.

The experience also connects visitors with Gombe’s important history of primate research and conservation, including the pioneering work of Jane Goodall.

2. Birdwatching

Gombe’s forest, woodland, streams and Lake Tanganyika shoreline provide a variety of habitats for birdlife. Birdwatchers can look for species such as African fish eagles, palm-nut vultures, turacos, barbets and hornbills, alongside other forest and lakeshore birds.

The combination of forest trails and open views across the lake makes birdwatching a worthwhile activity in its own right. A local guide can help identify species by sight and call, while patient observation is especially useful in the denser parts of the forest.

3. Wildlife and Other Primates

Chimpanzees share Gombe’s forests with several other primates. Olive baboons are often seen around the lakeshore, while blue monkeys, red-tailed monkeys and red colobus monkeys may be encountered in the trees and forest canopy.

The park also supports other wildlife, including small mammals and reptiles, although sightings vary. With its steep terrain and narrow forest paths, Gombe is best explored on foot rather than by conventional game drive.

4. Forest Walks, Waterfalls and Viewpoints

Guided walks provide an opportunity to appreciate Gombe beyond its chimpanzees. Trails pass through forest and stream valleys, with opportunities to observe plants, butterflies, birds and other signs of wildlife.

Kakombe Waterfall is one of the park’s recognised natural attractions. Jane’s Peak offers a viewpoint over the forested hills and Lake Tanganyika, while areas associated with Jane Goodall’s research provide historical context for the park’s conservation story. Trail conditions and the time required for walks depend on the route and weather.

5. Lake Tanganyika Experiences

Lake Tanganyika forms an important part of the Gombe experience. The shoreline offers views across the lake, opportunities for photography and a chance to appreciate one of Africa’s major freshwater ecosystems.

Depending on local arrangements and approved locations, swimming or snorkelling may be possible. Visitors should check with park staff or their accommodation before planning water activities, and follow current safety advice. Boat transfers to and from Gombe are also an essential part of most visits.

Best Time to Visit Gombe Stream National Park

Gombe can be visited throughout the year, but weather conditions influence trekking, walking and travel by boat. The most suitable period depends on whether your priority is easier trail access, chimpanzee tracking, birdwatching or the greener forest landscape.

Drier months: June to October

This is generally a practical period for forest trekking, with less rainfall and often firmer trails. It is a popular time to visit, but chimpanzee encounters are not guaranteed, and the animals’ movements can vary from day to day.

Wetter months: November to May

Rainfall can make forest paths slippery and hiking more demanding, particularly during the heavier rains. The forest becomes lush, and birdwatching can be rewarding. Visitors should allow flexibility in their plans and check current conditions before travelling.

Planning Your Visit

Gombe is a remote park, so it is worth allowing sufficient time for the journey from Kigoma, boat transfers and activities within the park. If chimpanzee tracking is your main priority, consider allowing more than one day where your itinerary and budget permit, as sightings cannot be guaranteed on a particular trek.

Wild Compass Africa can help plan a Tanzania itinerary that combines Gombe’s chimpanzee forests with other destinations according to your interests, available time and travel arrangements.
