Golden Monkey (Cercopithecus Kandi)

Golden monkeys are rare, vividly colored primates known for their bright orange-gold fur, playful behavior, and highland bamboo forest habitat. Endemic to the Virunga Mountains—a volcanic range shared by Uganda, Rwanda, and the DRC—these monkeys are both beautiful and endangered, often overshadowed by their larger cousins, the mountain gorillas.

Scientific name: Cercopithecus kandti

Habitat: High-altitude bamboo and montane forests (1,800–3,600 meters)

Weight: Males: 8–12 kg; Females: 6–7 kg

Lifespan: Around 20 years in the wild

IUCN Status: Endangered – threatened by habitat loss and restricted range

Golden monkeys are a subspecies of the blue monkey but are easily distinguished by their rich golden-orange flanks, cheeks, and backs. Agile and social, they live in large groups and are known for their acrobatic leaps through the bamboo canopy.

Quick Facts About the Golden Monkey

Endemic Range

Golden monkeys are only found in the Virunga Volcanoes region, including Mgahinga Gorilla National Park (Uganda), Volcanoes National Park (Rwanda), and Virunga National Park (DRC).

Social Groups

They live in large troops of 30 to over 100 individuals, led by a dominant male. These groups are very active and vocal, moving frequently in search of food.

Diet

Golden monkeys are primarily bamboo specialists, feeding on young shoots, leaves, fruits, lichens, and occasionally insects. Their diet can shift seasonally based on availability.

Communication

They use chirps, squeaks, and body language to communicate. Alarm calls are sharp and loud—often used when eagles or other predators are spotted.

Reproduction

Females give birth to a single infant after about 5 months of gestation. Infants are closely guarded in the early months and become more independent after 1 year.

Behavior

Golden monkeys are diurnal and spend most of their time in the forest canopy, though they often descend to the ground to feed.

Where to See Golden Monkeys

Golden monkeys are limited to the Virunga Massif, a chain of extinct volcanoes covered in lush highland forest. They are not widespread like other monkey species, making a sighting of them extra special.

Top Destinations for Golden Monkey Trekking:

Uganda

Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Uganda’s only golden monkey population lives here. Trekking is available daily, and habituation experiences allow longer time with a semi-wild troop—ideal for photographers and researchers.

Rwanda

Volcanoes National Park

Rwanda offers golden monkey trekking as an add-on to gorilla treks, often in the same park sector. The monkeys here are well-habituated and tend to stay in the lower bamboo zones, making the trek relatively easy.

Democratic Republic of Congo

Virunga National Park

Though golden monkeys exist here, tours are limited due to security concerns. Conservation efforts continue, but tourism is restricted.

Top Tips for Viewing Golden Monkeys

  1. Combine with Gorilla Trekking

Golden monkeys often live in the same national parks as gorillas—combine both for a diverse primate safari.

  1. Choose the Habituation Experience (Uganda)

This offers up to 4 hours with a semi-habituated troop, compared to the standard 1-hour visit. It’s perfect for photographers and wildlife lovers.

  1. Best Time to Visit

Golden monkeys are visible year-round, but the dry seasons (June–September and December–February) offer clearer trails and better light for photography.

  1. Dress for the Forest

Wear long sleeves, trekking boots, gloves, and a rain jacket. These forests are often wet, muddy, and cool, especially at high altitudes.

  1. Stay Quiet and Still

Though used to humans, golden monkeys can be skittish. Quiet, calm behavior helps you get better sightings and photos.

Safari Holiday Ideas to See Golden Monkeys

Golden monkeys offer a perfect complementary experience to gorilla or chimpanzee trekking. Their colorful appearance, social nature, and limited range make them a highlight for primate enthusiasts and conservation travelers.
