Shompole Conservancy – The Hidden Gem Near the Serengeti

Park Overview

Tucked away on the southern edge of the Loita Plains, close to the Kenya–Tanzania border, Shompole Conservancy—sometimes referred to as the Magi-Serengeti area—remains one of East Africa’s most secluded safari destinations. Unlike the more frequented parks such as Serengeti or Maasai Mara, Shompole offers exclusivity, privacy, and a sense of untouched wilderness.

This community-led conservancy was established in partnership with local Maasai communities, who play a vital role in conserving the land and wildlife. For travelers, this means not only a rich safari experience but also the chance to immerse in Maasai culture and traditions. The landscape is a mix of sweeping plains, scattered acacia woodlands, volcanic ridges, and seasonal riverbeds—an environment that supports a wide variety of wildlife while remaining photogenic and serene.

Shompole is ideal for travelers seeking off-the-beaten-path adventures, far removed from the safari crowds, where nature thrives in its raw form and cultural authenticity remains central to the experience.

How to Get to Shompole Conservancy

Reaching Shompole Conservancy is relatively straightforward, with options depending on where you are traveling from:

  • By Road
From Nairobi, the conservancy can be reached in about 4–5 hours by 4×4 vehicle via Magadi and the Loita Plains. From northern Tanzania (such as the Serengeti or Ngorongoro), it can also be accessed through border crossings, making it a convenient stopover when combining safaris across Kenya and Tanzania.

  • By Air
The most comfortable option is a charter flight to Shompole’s airstrip from Nairobi’s Wilson Airport or nearby safari destinations such as Amboseli or Serengeti. This drastically reduces travel time and provides spectacular aerial views of the Rift Valley, lakes, and plains.

  • Safari Extensions
Shompole fits seamlessly into itineraries that include Amboseli National Park in Kenya or the Serengeti in Tanzania. It works beautifully as a 1–2 night extension, offering tranquility and exclusivity before or after visiting busier parks.
