Walking Safari – Ngorongoro Highlands
Scroll for more Info
The Ngorongoro Highlands offer a different way to experience Tanzania's wilderness. Away from the vehicle, the landscape reveals details that are easy to miss on a game drive: bird calls rising from the grass, animal tracks crossing a dusty path, wildflowers growing along the trail and the changing shapes of the volcanic hills.
Accompanied by an authorised local guide or ranger, you explore the highland landscape at a slower pace, learning about its wildlife, plants and ecology along the way. The experience is less about covering distance or searching for the Big Five and more about understanding the smaller details that make this part of Tanzania so distinctive.
For nature lovers, birdwatchers and photographers, a guided walk offers time to observe, ask questions and appreciate the highlands beyond the usual safari routes.
Depending on the route and conditions, a walk may pass through open grassland, woodland, forest edges and rolling highland terrain. Your guide can explain animal tracks and signs, point out birds and insects, and share knowledge of the plants and wildlife that inhabit the area.
You may encounter smaller creatures and natural details that are easily overlooked from a vehicle, while the wide views across the highlands provide excellent opportunities for landscape photography. Wildlife sightings vary, and the experience is shaped as much by the terrain and natural surroundings as by the animals you encounter.
Some walks can be arranged with a break for refreshments or a picnic, subject to the location, permissions and arrangements made in advance.
Walking conditions depend on rainfall, the chosen route and the time of year. The drier months, generally June to October, often provide firmer trails, while the wetter months bring greener vegetation, fresh growth and changing conditions underfoot.
Walking can be rewarding in different seasons, but routes and departure times should be selected according to the weather and local guidance. Your guide can advise on the most suitable option for your visit.
A guided walk can add variety to a Northern Circuit safari, particularly for travellers who want to spend time outside a vehicle. Depending on the route, access arrangements and your itinerary, it may complement visits to the Ngorongoro area, Tarangire National Park or Lake Manyara National Park.
A half-day walk may suit travellers with a busy itinerary, while a longer outing allows more time to explore the landscape at a relaxed pace. The precise location, duration and walking arrangements should be confirmed before the activity is included in your programme.
Accommodation can be selected according to your preferred comfort level, location and access to the planned activity. Any lodge advertised as offering guided walks should be checked for its current arrangements and the specific routes available.
Comfortable, sturdy walking shoes are essential, particularly on uneven or muddy ground. Carry drinking water, sun protection and a hat, and bring binoculars if you enjoy birdwatching. A camera is well worth having, especially for close-up details of plants, insects and birds, as well as the expansive highland views.
Follow your guide's instructions throughout the walk and let them know about any mobility concerns or physical limitations before setting out. The route and pace should suit the group's abilities and the conditions on the day.
