Olduvai Gorge – The Cradle of Humankind

Park Overview

Olduvai Gorge, often spelled Oldupai, is one of the most significant paleoanthropological sites in the world. Tucked between the Ngorongoro Crater and Serengeti National Park in Northern Tanzania, this dramatic canyon is where groundbreaking discoveries transformed our understanding of human origins.

The gorge stretches nearly 48 kilometers and plunges up to 90 meters deep, exposing layers of sediment that hold an incredible record of life spanning millions of years. It is here that Dr. Louis and Mary Leakey unearthed fossils of early humans and stone tools dating back 1.75 million years, offering unmatched insights into human evolution. Because of its unparalleled contribution to the story of humanity, Olduvai Gorge is part of the UNESCO World Heritage–listed Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

Visiting Olduvai Gorge is more than just a stopover on safari; it is a journey back in time to the very cradle of humankind. Travelers not only witness breathtaking scenery but also stand on ground that shaped the global narrative of archaeology, anthropology, and human culture.
