Culture and People of Tanzania

Tanzania is one of the world’s most linguistically and culturally diverse countries, with over 120 languages spoken. The four main language groups are Nilotic, Cushitic, Bantu, and Khoisan. Swahili is the primary language used in parliamentary debates and is a unique blend of African and Arab influences. The Sukuma ethnic group is the largest, making up 15.5% of the population.

Climate and Geography

Tanzania’s tropical climate is characterized by moderate temperatures and regional variations. The coastal region is hot and humid, with heavy rainfall during the wet season. The Central Plateau is cooler and arid. Tanzania experiences two rainy seasons, with the heaviest rains occurring from March to May and shorter rains from November to January. The dry season, which runs from May to October, is characterized by cooler temperatures. Daytime temperatures range from 21°C to 32°C, while nighttime temperatures fluctuate between 10°C and 15°C.

Best Time to Visit Tanzania

Tanzania is a year-round destination, but the best time for a safari is from June to October. To witness the Great Migration, visit in August for the river crossing experience. The dry season, from May to October, is ideal for safaris, while the wet season, from March to May, is best for witnessing the Great Migration. The shoulder season, from November to January, is a good time for birdwatching.
